Saturday night, the fútbol fans took a trip to watch a local soccer game. Palmeiras and Bahia were playing their first game. The crew was eager to observe the local Brazilian craze over soccer.
To get to the stadium, we took the subway. It was very similar to the one in the US. There were a lot of beautiful graffitis in the station. Interestingly there was a vending machine for books on the station platform which Laurel found it fascinating. The subway was filled with the fan of Palmeiras who were going to the game. It only took us the halfway to the stadium.
The subway dropped us off 16 min walking distance away from the stadium. We decide to walk with the fans. On the way, Phil decides to buy a jersey to make it looks like he belongs here.
We stop for churrascarias, a grilled beef and chicken on a stick. Everyone loved the churrascarias except me. As a vegetarian, I enjoyed watching the people eating churrascarias. After tasting it, Shane said we should start a business back in the US. He stated people would enjoy eating this during a tailgate.
When we arrived at the stadium, we had a little hitch back. Our beloved Jeff lost the ticket, and we missed the kickoff. However, we were pleased by the Palmeiras scoring an early goal.
The seats were at the top but it had an amazing view. Everyone was surprised by the fans. There was a section for extreme fans who all wore the white jersey. They were near the field and played drums. This fans didn’t stop cheering and jumping until the end of the game. There was a section with glass barrier for the opposite team name fans. There was a lot of swearing and yelling toward the fans section. We were amazed by the rivalry between the teams.
At halftime, I got pizza but it didn’t have any sauce so it was more like a cheese bread. The rest of the game was fabulous. Everyone enjoyed the devoted fans of Palmeiras more than the game itself. In the end, the score was 3-0. It was fun to watch a soccer game in Brazil.
